Description

La Galissonnière class light cruiser is the French navy's decision to use "Emile Bertam" as the basis, combined with heavy cruiser "Algeria" protection design, at the expense of sacrificing the speed of the defense capabilities built by the World War II France Lightweight cruisers. La Galissonnière's excellent hull shape made its actual speed exceed the original design speed of 31 knots, reaching 32 knots, of which the Marseillaise Tracks had tested the speed reached 35 knots. After the outbreak of World War II, the level were assigned to join the third cruiser and the fourth cruiser team, which also laid the ship of different fate of the future class. The George Leygues of the Fourth Cruiser fleet was dispatched by the French government of Vichy to the coast of Gabon, Central Africa to counter the activities of the free French army in Central Africa but was intercepted by British cruisers and fled to Dakar Harbor. After the Allies landed in North Africa, George Leygues joined the Free French Navy in fighting the German and Italian troops. In mid-1943, George Leygues traveled to the United States for a large-scale conversion, dismantling aviation equipment and hangars to greatly enhance air defense capabilities. In the second half of 1943, the refitted George Leygues went to the Mediterranean Theater to participate in the battle. In 1944, he participated in the Overlord Operations, the Normandy landing fire support mission, and the Dragoons landing in southern France.
