Description

Amphibious operations (landing personnel, equipment and supplies from ships via vehicles to a hostile shore) are considered by military tacticians to be the most complex and difficult of all military operations. The U.S. Marine Corps is the military organization in America charged with this responsibility and is the only American service branch with the LVTP7A1 in its inventory. The LVTP (Landing Vehicle Tracked, Personnel), popularly known as Amtracs (amphibious Tractors), were developed prior to and improved upon during WWII. The LVTP7, currently in use, is now being replaced by the LVTP7A1 version which has been much improved. This versatile vehicle can navigate in ocean waves 3 meters high while carrying 25 fully equipped Marines to shore. It is a very large, tracked vehicle, being almost the same length as the U.S. M1 Abrams main battle tank, including its main gun. The first LVT's entered combat during the Tarawa invasion in 1943, and in the ensuring 45 years has gone through many changes and requirements.
