Description

La Belle Alliance is situated near a low ridge which cuts across the Brussels road and close to where Napoleon bivouaced on the night before the battle of Waterloo. On June 18th 1815, Napoleon advanced directly up the road toward Waterloo and Brussels. The battle which followed reached a climatic pitch when the French Old Imperial Guard assaulted the wavering centre of the British line. Napoleon's elite Guard was repulsed and sent reeling back by the concentrated fire of British muskets and artillery. On seeing this the French army broke and began its long retreat back to Paris.
