Description

Elco 80 (sometimes other term: Type PT-103) is the name of a type of American torpedo boats from the Second World War. The length of this type of units was 24 m, width 6.3 meters, and the displacement did not exceed 30 tons. The crew consisted of about 15-17 people. The deck armament was of various configurations, but most often consisted of 4 single 533 mm torpedo tubes, two 12.7 mm machine guns and a 20 mm cannon. The Elco 80 type boats were developed by the Elco Naval Division for the needs of the US Navy as a modernization of the PT-20 type torpedo boats already produced by this company. Compared to their predecessors, the new cutters were larger in size and had reinforced deck armament. In order to reduce production costs, their hulls - almost entirely - were made of wood. Units of this type were characterized by a high maximum speed, as well as were very easy to repair and cheap to operate. During World War II, 326 Elco 80 boats were built. The lion's share of them was used primarily in the Pacific.
