Description

The battles of Chippawa Lundy’s Lane and Fort Erie were violent and bloody clashes in which the forces of the US, Canada and Great Britain were savaged. The US sought to break the bloody stalemate by conducting a final offensive that was launched in September. Both sides had rushsed reinforecments to the area, including units from Lord Wellington’s victorious campaign in Spain. The US sortied from Fort Erie and confronted their British and Canadian foes once again at the Chippawa battlefield, only to find their enemy firmly entrenched behind formidable defenses. In an effort to outflank their foes, US Major General George Izard dispatched a column of troops under the command of Brigadier General Daniel Bissell to capture a British supply depot at Cook’s Mills, and if successful, see if they could then compel the British and Canadians to withdraw from their positions at Chippawa. Alert to the dangers such a flanking move could cause, British General Gordon Drummond dispatched a force to intercept and drive off the Americans. What ensued was the last major engagement of the Niagara Campaign.
