Description

When Fidel Castro overthrew dictator Fulgencio Batista on December 31, 1958 some in Washington looked with guarded optimism upon the new Cuban leader. That optimism evaporated with each month of 1959 as Fidel’s new government grew more oppressive and his developing ties with the Communist government in Moscow were discovered. Later that year President Eisenhower authorized the CIA to recruit and train Cuban Exiles to form an army that would overthrow the Communist government and Castro. The CIA effort would be supported by the US military and friendly Central American nations, particularly Nicaragua. When newly-elected President Kennedy was inaugurated the CIA’s plans and Cuban exile army were ready. However, the new president wanted “plausible deniability” and the CIA invasion plans were extensively modified, with all the Cuban exile aircraft relocated to Nicaragua airbases, and removing any direct support by US armed forces. What was left was very weakened, yet still powerful Cuban exile invasion force armed with tanks, heavy weapons, and well trained for sustained combat operations.

All that remained was for the Cuban people to rally to their support once the invasion commenced.
