Description

A fine chess set is a mark of distinction suitable for display in even the most distinguished of rooms. Michael Ricker, the world renowned metalsmith, provides the types of sets that satisfy the most discerning of collectors with their elegantly crafted, highly detailed pieces. Their artistry is truly peerless, and none can contest their timeless elegance.

This set features the wildlife of North America as its subject, with owls serving as pawns, eagles as rooks, mountain lions as knights, bears as bishops, and, of course, the noble elk serving as king and queen. Each piece moves with heft and purpose weighing in around 1 1/2 pounds, with the regal king standing a commanding 5 1/2 inches tall. The board measures 19 1/2 inches to a side set in gorgeous gold and black tones to beautifully set stage for the pieces. The gold tone squares are textured to provide a unique level of contrast not seen in other boards.

This particular set has seen moderate play use over many years with some gentle scuffing across many of the black surfaces. A few squares and places on the edges have significant scratching, with one square in particular being deeply scuffed to the point of discoloration. A few of the gold tone squares have small circular stains as if from splashed liquids. The board can be considered VG overall.

However, other than some flattening and general wear to the bottom felt, typical of sets of this type, there is no noteworthy damage to any of the pieces making them NM.

Additional photos avialable upon request.

Included with the set is an appraisal from Michael Ricker dated 1994, showing the piece's continued growth as a prized piece of art. A scant 200 of these sets were ever produced making each one a precious treasure, and an opportunity not to be missed.
