Description

The Cape Horn was one of those rare five masted sailing vessels which confronted the ultimate test for sailors, successful passage of which made them “Cape-Horners”. Such ships were mainly designed to transport coal, cement, and various European manufactured goods to the Pacific coast of South America, from which they returned with sundry fertilizers, nitrates, and guano. This type of ship was first built in the 1880s and enjoyed remarkable fame right up to the advent of steam ships. The Cape Horn was a five masted ship with an overall length of 148.20m, a water-line beam of 16.40m, a draft of 8.30m, and a total sail surface of 5,580 square meters. She could carry 1,150 tons, required 48 crew and officers, and could do seventeen knots in good trade winds. Bordeaux was the port of registry for a number of these such vessels.

As to the cape itself, Cape Horn is a sheer cliff, 580 meters high, which marks the southernmost point of South America. Strong gusts of wind can sprint up from anywhere; the passage is cluttered with reefs and shoals, and is also the subject to numerous coastal currents.
