Description

Little did the New York Yankees know that their purchase of Babe Ruth from the Boston Red Sox would require them to buy a new stadium as well. Perturbed that the slugger's presence caused Yankee attendance figures to double and exceed theirs for the 1920 season, the New York Giants told their tenants that they were no longer welcome at the Polo Grounds, which had been home to both teams since 1913. Yankee owners, Jacob Rupert and Tillinghast L'Hommedieu Huston purchased 10 acres in the west Bronx and set out to build a spectacular stadium of their own, baseball's first triple-decked structure.

In 1923, at the end of the first season at their new home, the Yankees would be victors over those same Giants and claim the World Series. Because it was the Babe's tremendous drawing power that had given birth to the facility, Yankee Stadium was dubbed, "The House That Ruth Built."
