Description

This is the vivid and definitive story of the "bravest and most fateful of all the convoys that was ever sailed to relieve Malta." The need for supplies on Malta was so great during the desperate summer of 1942 that without them surrender was inevitable. Operation Pedestal is of special interest to Americans since the spotlight was on the S.S. Ohio, a fast United States tanker made available to the British by the U.S. Government. This modern armada consisted of two battleships, four aircraft carriers, twelve cruisers, and forty destroyers deployed to escort and protect fourteen merchant ships. Ranged against them were twenty-one enemy submarines, twenty-three E-boats and 540 aircraft.
