Description

The flamboyant cavalry unit of the Mamelukes originated with the mounted company of Syrian Janissaries raised by General Kléber in 1799. This cavalry unit would evolve during the Consulate and the Empire, ultimately becoming the 10th squadron of the regiment of Chasseurs à Cheval of the Guard, comprising men of all colors, in 1813.The figure depicts the legendary Officier de Mamelouk de la Garde Impériale of this exotic unit: the courageous Frenchman François Antoine Kirman.Born in 1768, Kirman – a brave military man that distinguished himself in many battles – was appointed a captain in the regiment of Chasseurs à Cheval in 1807 and Chef d’Escadron of the same regiment in 1808, at which point he took command of the Mamelukes and fought in Germany 1809, and in Spain in 1810 and 1811.
