Description

This 2" x 1.5" soft enamel pin combines a black soft enamel with a white design to make a stylish and subtle accessory to any ensemble. Features two posts and butterfly clutches for extra security.

Edward "Blackbeard" Teach was arguably the most infamous pirate to ever set sail. Blackbeard cut a bloody swathe across the merchant vessels of the Atlantic coast from his flagship, The Queen Anne's Revenge. Though Teach was a fearsome combatant, he preferred to avoid combat when possible and relied upon his legend to cow victims into submission. The only historical reference to his flag comes from a 1718 newspaper report stating that his fleet flew "black flags with death's heads" and "bloody flags." The design here is most likely from an early 20th century interpretation of rumors about Blackbeard and illustrates a horned devil toasting death (or holding an hourglass, a symbol of death) in the right hand, while brandishing a spear towards a bloody heart in its left. Whatever the truth of these symbols, Blackbeard left an indelible impression in the imagination of the public after his death in a savage battle off the coast of North Carolina.
