Description

Zapefenstreich in Norditalien, or Zapfenstreich in Northern Italy, is a report on the end of the German South Army in Southern Austria and Northern Italy.

A Zapfenstreich is the traditional music or "tattoo" played signaling the end of the military day and preparation for "lights out" - a period in which the soldier needs to remain in his quarters.

This book is from the point of view of a gunner with a heavy artillery unit, in the language of an 18-year-old. The downfall is experienced very consciously and with open eyes, like the series of frames in a film. The mood at home, the assassination attempt on Adolf Hitler, air raids, difficult training, the Nazi ideology and Himmler's orders to hold out, the Volkssturm (a militia formed late in the war), the political and military situation, the last Christmas of the war - the topic is very interesting from a psychological and contemporary point of view.

The statements correspond to historical facts (only a few personal names have been changed) and can also be seen as a contribution to the history of the troops, especially since there are only a few records of the 90th Panzer Grenadier Division.

This is a German language item and includes no English components unless noted in the condition note.
