Description

In Proud Heritage, the author tells the story of that famous regiment, The Highland Light Infantry; this, the first volume, contains the history of the old Seventy-First, raised in 1777 as the 73rd Highlanders, renumbered in 1786, converted into Light Infantry in 1809, and in 1881 linked with the 74th Highlanders to form the regiment which ever since has been called The Highland Light Infantry.

Few regiments in the British Army have such a fine record of service as the old Seventy-First. After taking part in the naval victory of Cape St. Vincent the regiment distinguished itself during the second siege of Gibraltar and then went to India, where it served in hard-fought campaigns. During the Napoleonic Wars it helped to capture the Cape of Good Hope, took part in an unauthorized expedition to South America, and won itself much glory in both Peninsular campaigns including Waterloo.
