Description

Germany’s Achilles heel in the Second World War was oil. The acute shortage of fuel brought about by Anglo-American air action played a dominant part in forcing the Third Reich into defeat. With no natural sources of oil, Germany was compelled to seek supplies from Romania and the Soviet Union and to accelerate the production of synthetic oil within its own borders. The Allies took action to eliminate all these sources. One remarkable plan, shelved only after the opening of the German Blitzkrieg and told here, would have led Britain into a war with Russia, with catastrophic consequences.
