Description

Torpedo-like missiles began to pierce the tall wheat and cornfields in the Caen area as hundreds of British tanks crossed the 12 ft. high rail-way embankment from Caen to Vimont. This was on July 18, the first day of the British Goodwood offensive that would resemble another Kursk-like tank loss except this was in France.
In the next few hours, starting at around 0920, most of the 11th Ar-mored Division would be decimated, as did, the Guards Armor Divi-sion that followed. By 1300, after only advancing a few miles, the of-fensive grinded to a halt with little to show for it except for over 150 tanks in ruin.
Opposite these two armor divisions (plus another that arrived on the 19th), Kampfgruppe Luck of the 21st Panzer Division and others, armed with many dreaded 88mm guns, had created a killing ground. Elements of the 1SS and 12SS Panzer Divisions arrived later to contin-ue the decimation.
