Panzerschlacht : Operation Gemse (goat) was one of the last offensives the German Army conducted after falling back in Poland under the weight of the Russian strike for Berlin from the Vistula River. Like so many last ditch efforts in February and March, 1945, local success did bring back the "glory days" that took the Russian off guard. However, none could change the course of the war.

Operation Gemse occurred at Lauban in early March as the Russian 3rd Guards Tank Army's spearheads reached their limits. Fierce German counterattacks reduced Russian strengths in the prior two weeks when Breslau fell. By March, the Russian had only 255 AFV. Its 7th Gd Tank Corps had just 55 tanks, for example. Of course, the Germans were also beaten but had managed to throw reserves in to equalize ratios. Their battalions were really just company strength. Lauban was an important rail hub that the Germans wanted to retain and when Russian spearheads reached it, the situation was ripe for a tank attack from the flanks and trap the Russians.

1.0.1 Game Scale: The map scale is about one mile per hex. All German AFV\HQ counters are company size. All AT\Panzer Grenadier\Infantry units are battalions. All Russian units are battalions.
