Turning Point Zama was Hannibal's last defense of Carthage against the Roman V and VI legions. The battle hinged on two unknowns, Hannibal's 80 elephants and Rome's cavalry. The 80 elephants with their armed drivers on top, raced to the first line of the Romans. Hannibal had hoped it would totally disorganize but when the beasts neared, the Romans used loud noise and skirmishers to cause some to scatter off in unpredictable directions. The Romans also opened up "lanes" in their lines to allow the beasts to simply move through and then be surrounded and killed. After this failed attempt, Hannibal's first line moved into Rome's first line. Hannibal's first line were all mercenaries from different tribes and found themselves being pushed back into Hannibal’s second line of trained but untested second line. The second line would not allow the mercenaries to retreat, which created chaos with some attacking Hannibal's second line.
