The best-known image of the 19th-century Australian outlaws is inevitably the iron-armored Kelly gang of 1880, but in fact the colony’s frontier criminals varied widely in character/ They included desperate runaway convicts, who were sometimes even reduced to cannibalism; flashy ‘gentlemen highwaymen’; and organized bandit gangs, who preyed on traffic during the Gold Rush, rustles livestock and robbed banks.
