Description

The dramatic World War II story of the assault that cracked open Hitler's "Fortress Europe." It was the largest combined maneuver in the history of warfare, involving the land, sea, and air forces of two countries: in particular, the 82nd Airborne (United States) and the 1st Airborne (Britain).

It was also the baptism by fire for most of the young paratroopers in combat for the first time with all the odds against them. The winds were gale force, the darkness of night confusing to the pilots and to the men. They landed in groups, and individually, miles apart and far from any recognizable drop zone. The then Colonel Gavin, also on his first combat mission, could not even be sure he was in Sicily.
