Description

The Phantom Major

This is the story of David Stirling, a reckless, elusive officer, feared by the Germans in World War II. The command he created was originally called is S.A.S. - Secret Air Service - because they planned to parachute to their targets. But when their first drop was a fiasco, the major shifted to ground operations.

With the help of the Long Range Desert Forces, Stirling's raiders worked their way deep behind enemy lines, destroying planes, hijacking trucks, derailing trains, setting fire to petrol dumps, blowing up ammunition depots and killing the enemy. They hid by day and then struck by night. From their hiding places in oases or wadis, they raced across the nighttime desert by jeep or truck to wreak their swift destruction. In the annals of war, few legends surpass that of the phantom major.
