The essence of the eight large volumes of the Cambridge Medieval History is here distilled, by one of its original editors, into a single work.

At his death Professor Previte-Orton had completed the writing of this Shorter Medieval History; but the whole work has been seen through the press by Mr. Philip Grierson. It is fully and authoritatively illustrated by Dr. S.H. Steinberg, who has personally selected its 300 pictures, making of it what is almost an encyclopedia of the European Middle Ages.

The plan was to interest unprofessional as well as professional historians. Previte-Orton had the gift of writing history for this broad purpose. The addition of such a large number of pictures, integral to the book, makes good what was a lack in the larger history. For convenience it is issed in two volumes, but these are not sold separately.
