Description

On 15th May 1865 a Smith-Knight engine departed from Cagliari marking the official starting date of railway operations on the Sardinia Island. In the same years, Welsh engineer Benjamin Piercy arrived on the island with the task of planning and building the entire railway network of the newly born Royal Sardinian Railway Company, as well as of the construction of a harbour on the Golfo degli Aranci. Piercy acquired large estates in Sardinia, where his descendants still reside, and placed much effort on improving agriculture on the island by running drainage and forestation projects and by introducing new methods for breeding cattle, horses and sheep. He was a close friend of Garibaldi, whose son, Ricciotti, became his pupil. His services to Sardinia were recognized by the appointment of the title of Commendatore of the Crown of Italy.
