Description

The Battle of the River Plate was the first naval clash of the Second World War, pitting the 'pocket battleship' Graf Spee against three cruisers of the Royal Navy.

After an exchange of gunfire with Ajax and Achilles, Graf Spee turned away to limp towards the neutral port of Montevideo. The British ships opted to shadow her, perhaps wondering why they had not been blown out of the water by what was still a superior warship.

The Graf Spee could not stay in Uruguay. It could not, fight its way clear of even Montevideo, let alone reach open seas, and now it's captain, Hans Langsdorff believed there was a vastly superior British force waiting for him just beyond the horizon (an effect greatly encouraged by Ajax and Achilles making smoke which was clearly visible from the port).

With little choice, Langsdorff ordered the Graf Spee under way with just a skeleton crew and she sailed a little way down the River Plate before dropping anchor. A short while later, the Graf Spee blew herself up, intentionally scuttled by her crew.

Langsdorff and the remaining crew escaped south by boat to Buenos Aires (in Argentina, far more favorable towards Germany at the time). There, he shot himself.

Cast in resin with metal 'details,' these models are 3D-designed to be extremely accurate 1/1800 scale representations of the fighting ships of World War II yet extremely easy for modeler's to work with. Supplied unpainted with integrated bases featuring realistic wakes.
