Description

With the outbreak of war in 1939 the Germans decided to set-up several trains. By 1941 the Germans were also using two captured Polish and a number of Czech armored trains, in addition to earlier German trains.

With captured Polish and Russian trains as templates the Germans went about creating a standard model of armored train in 1941. This was known as the BP42, and with later additions, the BP44. These new trains borrowed from the captured designs’ increased artillery capability over the existing German trains.

They also overcame some of the perceived design flaws in the captured trains by splitting the artillery car in two, leaving only one gun on each car reducing loss of firepower an artillery car was knocked out. Modern anti-aircraft guns and tank-hunter cars were also added making a formidable self-contained fighting unit.

During 1944 the Germans ran two Polish trains. These were Armored Trains 21 and 22. Armored Train 21 was armed with a mix of 10cm and 7.5cm guns. Armored Train 22 was armed with 7.5cm guns. During 1944 these trains also received German BP44 Panzer IV turret tank-hunter cars. Armored Train 23, while made up of ex-Czech cars also received some Polish cars and Russian two-turret artillery cars similar
