Description

The 80mm 29/38M Anti-aircraft gun designed by Bofors may have been overshadowed by its little brother, the 40mm Bofors Anti-aircraft gun during World War Two. But it’s design took root in the work done in conjunction with Krupp which eventually led to the design of the even more famous gun, the infamous German ‘88’.

The Model 29 was produced both in a 75mm and 80mm calibre version and was sold to a wide range of countries including Argentina, China, Finland, Greece, Iran and Thailand.

The biggest customer however was the Hungarians, who received the 80mm version. These guns were put into action with the Hungarian Army during the conflict with the Soviet Union between 1941 and 1944.

The guns were assigned to the AA Battalions of the Hungarian Army and it was planned to make use of the gun’s high muzzle velocity in an Anti-tank role much the like German ‘88’. However, the gun never enjoyed the same success in the Anti-tank role as its German counterpart. Despite this, the 80mm 29/38M Anti-aircraft gun proved itself as a sound performer during the course of it service with the Hungarian Army.
