Description

HALFAYA PASS, SOUTH OF SOLLUM, EGYPT, 16 June 1941: With significant armored reinforcements in hand, the result of the Tiger Convoy, Wavell pushed forward with what would be his final desert offensive as a commander, Operation Battleaxe. The attack was launched with the express goal of clearing eastern Cyrenaica of Axis forces. It was also aimed at lifting the long-standing siege of the vital Western Desert port, Tobruk. A thorn in Wavell’s side stood like a sentinel along the coast: Halfaya Pass. Commanded by a humble but resolute former pastor, Bach, the commanding heights and its defender soon gave the place the infamous nickname, “Hellfire Pass”. The 88mm dual-purpose gun, ably crewed and sited from positions on the heights, gave Bach his punch. A series of British assaults were launched, a typical action occurring on June 16, 1941, a day with temperatures that rose to more than 130 degrees Fahrenheit. Soldiers of the 4th Indian Division pushed on tenaciously, as ‘88’ shells decimated their tank support. Eventually, the Indians captured a foothold on some high ground, and Halfaya village fell. Bach’s men held on, and the pastor also hit back with local Panzer reserves in limited counter-attacks. By the 17th Allied and German troops stood where they started for the most part and Hellfire Pass continued to loom as a menace, although now isolated from the main line of the Afrikakorps...

ASLComp AFRIKAKORPS: Hellfire Pass and Beyond is a detailed new ASLComp VARIANT that tells the story of the War in North Africa. It's about time the desert warfare goodness that was spawned by Hal Hock's seminal work TOBRUK back in 1975... was brought to the gaming tables of ASLers. And now it is, in a big way.

The eleventh portion of the set-piece is ASLComp AFRIKAKORPS: Hellfire Pass and Beyond and brings the giant Escarpment overlay into play and then some. Yes, you get Halfaya Pass, Pastor Bach and his '88' guns. You also get to see the new "Diana" counters in play for the first time, as well as other actions using the escarpment overlay in all its glory. This set of 8 scenarios includes more El Alamein actions and also uses the escarpment overlay to depict Longstop Hill.

You receive a set of 8 scenarios, all depicting actions from the exciting offensive, rife with combined-arms actions. And yes, these are aimed at playability. Slap them down, bang them out, do it again. And again. Please do a little hooting and hollering while you're at it... at least when you roll 'snakeyes' (or the other guy rolls 'boxcars').

ASLComp AFRIKAKORPS—Hellfire Pass and Beyond contains:

  • 8 action-packed scenarios depicting actions from Rommel's drive into Cyrenaica
  • Color cover sheet
  • Descriptive back sheet
  • Ziploc style storage bag
  • All the interest in the War in North Africa that you have been waiting for someone to show you
