Sd Kfz 250-9 (2cm)

The rough terrain of the vast Russian steppes proved challenging for the four-wheeled Sd Kfz 222 Armored Car, so in March 1942 it was suggested that the small Sd Kfz 250 half-track might be a better choice for the reconnaissance role.

Three prototype vehicles of the Sd Kfz 250/9 design were sent to Russia and immediately proved far more capable of coping with the extensive cross-country distances encountered than wheeled vehicles.

In May 1943 production of the Sd Kfz 250/9 “Armored Car” on the Alte version began. The turret, complete with 2cm KwK38 and MG34, from the Sd Kfz 222 armored car was transplanted onto a new armored roof.

When production of the Alte version of the Sd Kfz 250 was replaced by the simplified Neu (New) version the /9 version was continued. However, the turret was changed to the later type as found on the Sd Kfz 234/1 Puma 8-wheeled armored car.

This had the newer, more versatile, Hangelafette (swinging mount) for the 2cm KwK38 gun and the MG42 was now fitted.

In Flames of War you can take the Sd Kfz 250/9 instead of the Sd Kfz 222 armored cars in Armored Car Patrols (page 32 Festung Europa). They can also be used with a Panzer Lehr Armored Car Patrol instead of the Sd Kfz 234/2 Puma (page 34 Villers-Bocage).

The 2cm cannon has self-defense anti-aircraft capability and is great for shooting up infantry, soft transport or even light armored vehicles. A must if you’re considering building an Aufklärungsschwadron that will include an armored car patrol.

The Sd Kfz 250/9 has Half-tracked mobility, Front Armor 1, Side 0 and Top 0, and it is armed with a co-ax MG and a 2cm KwK38 gun.

The 2cm KwK38 gun has a Range of 16”/40cm, ROF 3, AT 5 and FP 5+. It is also a Self-defense anti-aircraft gun giving it the ability to fire at aircraft attacking its own platoon.
