Description

This is a beautifully illustrated depiction of Hadrian's Wall in both Roman times and during the Jacobite Uprising. The authos describe it as being part of a much larger work to contain about 80 color plates and 300 illustrations. The illustrations of Ronald Embleton are considered among the best on this subject. Contains four excellent full page color plates by Ronald Embleton depicting life along Hadrian's Wall. One is of General Wade's army in 1745, during the Jacobite Revolt. There is a unit of regular infantry marching by with green facings. Another plate depicts an interior cutaway of the two stories of Turret 18A at Wallhouses East that includes six soldiers. The third shows William Hutton "welcomed" at Rudchester Hall. The fourth color plate is Roman Postgate in winter showing the gatehouse, soldiers checking a traveler's papers and packhorses.
